Now, about S’mores, Cal likes them a lot! So do his classmates…
Cal and the Great S’mores Day
One sunny Friday afternoon, Cal and his classmates were buzzing with excitement. Miss Bloom had written a special message on the whiteboard that morning:
“Today: S’MORES DAY!”
“What’s a s’more?” asked Javier, tilting his head.
“You’ve never had a s’more?” said Emma, her eyes wide. “It’s the best gooey, chocolaty, marshmallowy sandwich ever!”
Miss Bloom clapped her hands. “That’s right! And today, we’re going to make them together—right here in the schoolyard. No campfire needed!”
Cal’s eyes lit up. “Are we really going to roast marshmallows?”
“Sort of,” Miss Bloom smiled. “We’ll use solar ovens we made in science last week. Remember those pizza boxes we turned into cookers?”
“Oh yeah!” said Cal. “We’re going to cook with the sun!”
Out on the playground, the class lined up their homemade solar ovens. Inside each one, they placed a graham cracker, a square of chocolate, and a fluffy white marshmallow. Then they closed the lids and let the sunshine do its magic.
While they waited, they played flashlight tag under the trees and made up silly camp songs—even though it was still bright out.
After about twenty minutes, Miss Bloom called them over. “Let’s check on our s’mores!”
Carefully, the students opened their boxes.
“Ooooh,” said Lila, watching the chocolate melt into a gooey puddle.
“Mine’s all squishy!” Cal said, pressing a graham cracker on top.
Everyone giggled and crunched into their warm, sticky, delicious creations. Some had chocolate on their noses. Some had marshmallow on their fingers. And everyone had a smile.
“This is the best kind of science project ever,” said Javier, licking his lips.
Miss Bloom nodded. “Science, sunshine, and snacks. That’s the recipe for a perfect afternoon!”
As they packed up, Cal looked at his friends and said, “Next time, we should make double s’mores!”
“Double?” Miss Bloom laughed. “Maybe we’ll need bigger pizza boxes!”
And with that, the Great S’mores Day came to a sweet and sunny end.
