Cal and the Day of the Nerds
When Cal walked into class on August 23, he noticed something strange right away. Mrs. Maple was wearing big round glasses with tape on the side and a bowtie covered in math equations.
“Good morning, class!” she said cheerfully. “Today is Find Your Inner Nerd Day! It’s a day to celebrate being curious, loving to learn, and being proud of what makes each of us unique.”
Mia giggled. “Does that mean we get to wear funny glasses too?”
Mrs. Maple smiled. “Even better. Today, each of you will share your ‘nerdy side’—something you love to learn about, collect, or explore.”
Cal thought hard. He raised his hand. “I guess my inner nerd is dinosaurs. I know all the dinosaur names—even the hard ones like Parasaurolophus!”
“Very impressive!” said Mrs. Maple.
Jordan jumped in. “My nerdy side is numbers. I love doing multiplication tables for fun. I even try to square numbers in my head.”
“Whoa, that’s super nerdy,” laughed Cal, “but also really cool.”
Mia stood proudly. “I’m a book nerd. I’ve already read three books this week!”
One by one, the students shared their “nerdy” passions: insects, space, art history, video games, and even baking. The classroom buzzed with excitement as they realized how different and interesting everyone’s nerdiness was.
At the end, Mrs. Maple held up a shiny poster that said:
“Being a nerd means you care deeply about learning. That’s something to celebrate!”
Cal whispered to Mia, “I think this might be my new favorite holiday. Being a nerd is awesome.”
“Totally,” Mia agreed. “We’re all nerds—and proud of it.”
The class cheered together: “Find Your Inner Nerd!”
