While the students are chomping down on some Candy Corn, why not have them ponder the following writing prompts to help them engage for Speak Up For Service Day?
1. Reflection and Impact (Personal Narrative)
- Prompt: Describe a time you or someone you know engaged in community service. What was the project? What challenges did you face, and more importantly, what was the most significant positive impact you witnessed or felt? Write about how that experience changed your view on service.
2. The Power of Recognition (Argumentative/Persuasive)
- Prompt: Speak Up For Service Day emphasizes talking about the good deeds of youth. Do you believe that public recognition is essential for inspiring young people to continue serving? Write a persuasive piece arguing for or against the importance of speaking up about volunteer efforts.
3. Imagining the Change (Creative/Fictional)
- Prompt: Imagine a superhero whose superpower isn’t strength or flight, but the ability to amplify the positive effects of service—making one small act of kindness ripple outward to inspire hundreds. Write a short story about this hero, focusing on one youth service project they help to spotlight and grow.
4. A Message to the Community (Letter/Speech)
- Prompt: Write a short speech or open letter to your local community. In it, you should highlight an overlooked area where youth service is making a difference. Use your words to motivate adults and peers to either support the youth volunteers or start their own service projects.
