Cal’s Visit to Sunny Acres Farm
Cal’s class was buzzing with excitement. Today, they were taking a field trip to Sunny Acres Farm to celebrate National Farm Animal Awareness Week. Their teacher, Mrs. Lopez, explained, “This week is about learning how farm animals help people and how we can take good care of them.”
When the bus pulled up, Farmer Jim greeted them with a big smile. “Welcome to Sunny Acres! Who’s ready to meet some of my animals?”
The first stop was the chicken coop. Cal noticed the hens scratching the ground, clucking softly. Farmer Jim said, “Chickens give us eggs, but they also eat bugs that can hurt crops. They’re very busy helpers!” Cal giggled as a curious hen pecked at his shoelace.
Next, they visited the cows. Cal was surprised at how gentle and calm they looked as they munched on hay. “Cows give us milk,” Farmer Jim explained, “but they need lots of care, good food, and clean barns to stay healthy.” Cal even got to pat one on the nose—it was warm and a little damp.
In the pig pen, the pigs were rolling happily in the mud. “Why are they so dirty?” Cal asked. Farmer Jim chuckled. “Pigs roll in mud to keep cool and protect their skin. They’re smarter than you think!”
Finally, the class stopped at the sheep pasture. Cal loved the soft wooly coats. Farmer Jim showed them how wool could be made into yarn for sweaters and blankets. “Taking care of sheep means making sure they have fresh grass and clean water,” he added.
On the bus ride back, Cal thought about everything he learned. Each animal had a special job, and it was important for people to treat them with kindness and respect. Cal raised his hand and said, “Mrs. Lopez, I think National Farm Animal Awareness Week isn’t just about learning—it’s about remembering to be thankful for all the animals that help us every day.”
Mrs. Lopez smiled. “Exactly, Cal.”
